Wallbrook Primary Academy has been confirmed as an early adopter school in the Government’s national breakfast club programme, which is being introduced in phases across primary schools in England from April 2026.
Early adopter schools are part of the first stage of the rollout and are delivering provision ahead of wider national expansion, helping to shape how the programme is developed in future phases.
The Academy’s breakfast club continues to develop, with additional staffing in place to support its expansion. The club is prioritising families already accessing the provision, while demand from other families across the school is also being reviewed.
To support this, the school has received a £1,000 start-up grant as part of its participation in the programme. The funding is being used to enhance the breakfast club offer, including board games, music activities, arts and crafts materials, reading resources and structured homework support.
Breakfasts provided through the club follow the School Food Standards, with a focus on healthy, balanced options. Pupils are offered a range of choices such as wholemeal toast and bagels, porridge and low-sugar cereals, alongside fresh fruit and yoghurt, helping to ensure they start the day with the energy they need for learning.
The provision also includes opportunities for pupils to read with adults, supporting literacy development in a calm and supportive setting. In addition, year 6 pupils will take on breakfast club ambassador roles. They will support staff and assist younger children with activities such as reading and games, while also developing leadership skills.
Lorna McGregor, Principal at Wallbrook Primary Academy, said: “We know how important the start of the day is for children and families. Breakfast club gives pupils a calm space to settle, spend time with friends and adults, and begin the school day in a positive way. Schemes like this play an important role in supporting children’s wider learning and development, and it’s important to us that our provision continues to meet the needs of all our families.”
The Government says the breakfast club scheme is intended to support pupils’ readiness to learn, improve attendance and behaviour, and reduce barriers to opportunity, while also providing early morning childcare support for families.
