At Wallbrook Primary Academy we passionately believe that learning does not stop when children walk out of our school gates.
Technology allows us to offer a range of extended and personalised learning opportunities beyond the classroom so that learning is seamless whether at school, at home or in the local community. Each class across the school has their own online learning environment called a ‘Class Site‘. These Class Sites are password protected and offer many opportunities for pupils to continue and extend their learning at home and also provide a window for parents into their child’s learning and school experiences.
We fully value the importance of work completed at home and provide many opportunities to develop reading, writing and mathematics skills at home, as well as creative arts and wider subject skills such as history and science. Teachers will use the Class Sites to set children weekly homework tasks for English and Mathematics and to share resources and tasks to support children in their learning. There will also be Project Based Learning Tasks where families together can work to produce a high-quality end product based on each half-term theme.
Many regular homework tasks will involve ‘Flipped Learning’. Flipped Learning is a simple idea where teachers set children ‘pre-learning’ tasks to complete before they arrive in lessons. For example a teacher might share a video that explains the method for written addition and some homework questions for children to complete to show their understanding. This ‘headstart’ to learning allows the teacher to adapt and personalise learning for pupils and offer the appropriate level of support or extension to children in the lesson so that they can learn most effectively.
We also value choice and ownership of learning by pupils. To support each Cornerstones Theme there will be a list of creative and fun ‘Home Learning Ideas’ for children to complete. We expect all children to choose three activities to complete at home each half term and look forward to sharing, displaying and celebrating the wonderful work that is produced back in school.
We recognise the vital contribution that families make to learning and we see families as partners in learning who work alongside the school to support and develop their child’s education.
If your child is in the Early Years Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1, the Class Sites have been developed with a focus on supporting parents and carers to help your child learn at home. You’ll find lots of useful information on how you might support your child’s learning across a range of areas, including phonics and mathematics. You’ll also find regular Home Learning activities and Class Messages to complete with your child.
In Key Stage 2 Class Sites have been developed for children to use more independently both in school and at home and in Year 6 help prepare them for Secondary school. You will find regular Home Learning activities and Class Messages as well as other features such as discussion questions for children to contribute to. We expect KS2 children to be more independent when completing homework tasks but would encourage parents to support children when stuck and to ask children questions and give opportunities to explain what they have been learning.
