Wallbrook Primary Academy in Coseley took part in a 10-year anniversary celebration hosted by educational resource provider Picture News, while also marking the school’s first year of using the programme.
The school received a commemorative badge as part of the initiative, recognising its involvement in Picture News classroom activities over the past year.
Developed by teachers and education consultants, Picture News provides weekly resources designed to help primary-aged pupils explore news stories and real-world issues in an age-appropriate way.
At Wallbrook Primary Academy, the materials have been used to support classroom conversations around current events and encourage pupils to share their views and ask questions.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, schools were invited to join a live online assembly held earlier this year. This included the Children’s 10-in-10 Challenge launch, a national initiative encouraging schools to take part in shared activities centred on teamwork and collaboration.
During the assembly, pupils heard from children at Hawkshead School in Cumbria, who shared details of their own planned event. The session also explored the story behind the wider 10-in-10 marathon challenge and the importance of teamwork, determination and supporting others.
School Principal, Lorna McGregor, said: “At Wallbrook, we want children to feel confident exploring and talking about the world around them from an early age. Picture News has helped create thoughtful discussions in our classrooms and encouraged pupils to share their ideas, ask questions and listen to different perspectives. Over the past year, we have seen how those conversations have helped build confidence, curiosity and empathy across our school community.”
The Academy said Picture News would continue to be used by teachers as a classroom resource to support learning and provide opportunities for pupils to explore real-world topics in an age-appropriate way.
