Pupils explore the wonders of the cosmos at National Space Centre

Year 5 pupils from Wallbrook Primary Academy took a journey through with a visit to the National Space Centre in Leicester. The trip offered learners an immersive insight into space exploration, astronomy and science.

Pupils explored the centre’s interactive galleries, filled with rockets, satellites and meteorite samples, and visited its planetarium. Highlights included the iconic 42-metre-high Rocket Tower. Pupils were also fascinated by a display of world-famous spacesuits. Among them were the Sokol Suit, worn by UK-born astronaut Tim Peake, Buzz Aldrin’s training suit from the historic Apollo 11 mission, and an EVA suit from the film The Martian

Hands-on workshops and exhibits guided the children from Earth, through the Solar System and beyond. They had the chance to explore the vastness of space and discover the challenges of space travel, from living in microgravity to managing daily life aboard the International Space Station.

School Principal, Lorna McGregor, said: “It was fantastic to see our pupils discovering science in such a hands-on way. Trips like this give children their first real taste of STEM, helping them explore ideas, ask questions, and see how what they learn in the classroom connects to the wider world.”

The National Space Centre is one of the UK’s leading science attractions, helping visitors of all ages learn about space, astronomy and the history of space exploration. Its galleries, planetarium shows and hands-on exhibits allow pupils to discover how rockets work, what life is like in space, and the science behind planets and stars. The centre creates a stimulating and memorable learning environment, making it an ideal destination for school trips.

The visit forms part of Wallbrook Primary Academy’s commitment to providing enriching experiences that complement the curriculum and foster curiosity in STEM subjects. Pupils returned to school brimming with excitement, eager to learn more and share their discoveries.
